1. What is a Trademark ISP?

A Trademark ISP is an Internet access service that adopts the theme of an organization. The organization can be a for-profit or nonprofit type, or for that matter, an individual.

2. How does an organization become an ISP?

Access to the Internet can be offered in two ways. One way involves "building" an infrastructure to support your ISP's anticipated volume of subscribers. In the case of AOL, they have built an infrastructure that supports the Internet access they market. The infrastructure includes hardware, software, and contractual obligations with communications companies. AOL has the burden of high fixed costs including marketing and other related expenses. A second way involves "leveraging" the infrastructure of an existing ISP. This method eliminates the burden of up-front fixed costs for capital equipment and other infrastructure costs. Today's technology allows for entry into the ISP market by outsourcing the entire process - all you have to do is have a target market and sell the service.

3. Why would a member-based organization want to be an ISP?

Any member-based organization that has a core membership that considers their participation with an affinity for the organization or cause, should consider the offering of Internet access as a "value-added" service to the members. In addition, the organization benefits in the form of residual income as well as secondary and tertiary revenue from advertising and other product or service offerings.

4. What "type" of organization is best fit to be an ISP?

There's no stock answer to this question. The benefits that organizations enjoy vary from organization to organization. The best way to describe the type of organization that would benefit from an ISP program is by example. Let's use literacy as a socio-economic issue. There are a number of organizations that sponsor programs to foster literacy programs. These organizations vary in size. One thing is for sure, people who are devoted to fostering literacy are a special breed - they want to be associated with that cause because it is a passion. There would certainly be a core constituency of members that would use a product marketed by their literacy organization if they knew that their usage meant funds for the organization. This is the central theme of the affinity-based ISP program.

5. Why would a member of my organization want to get Internet access from us (your organization)?

The answer in simple; Dial-up access to the Internet is a commodity and product differentiation amongst ISP's is slim. Technology and wholesaling of ISP backbones has allowed for the entry of a number of well-qualified ISP's into the market. The competition is fierce. Logging onto the Internet is becoming akin to making a phone call? Your decision of carrier is primarily price-driven. This accurately illustrates the state-of-affairs in the ISP market. The result, a number of ISP's are offering programs at pricing that are substantially below the nationally recognized brand name like AOL, MSN, etc. By getting Internet access through your organization, your membership is able to communicate via the Internet while announcing their affinity for your organization. At the same time, your subscribers get the satisfaction of knowing that their selection for Internet access has a direct and positive impact on your organization.
